Samsung ready for 5G rollout in 2020, has reportedly pulled down 1Gbps in tests

LTE might be all the rage right now, but next generation mobile technology is already in the works. According to Korea's Yonhap News Agency, Samsung has successfully tested its 5G platform, pulling down data at 1Gbps in recent tests. The company apparently needed 64 antenna elements to pull the trick off, but says the technology will be available to customers by 2020 -- matching the European Commission's goal quite nicely. It may not be the fastest 5G test we've seen in recent months, but we're not going to scoff at progress.

Afghanistan says Iranian guards killed 10 migrants

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Iranian border guards killed 10 Afghan migrants and wounded another eight when hundreds tried to illegally cross into Iran in search of work, Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said Sunday. Iran denied that.

Details of the incident Friday in Afghanistan's northwestern Farah province have been sketchy and often contradictory. An Interior Ministry statement said 300 Afghan laborers tried to cross into Iran illegally, looking for work. Iranian border guards opened fire, killing 10, it said. The ministry also blamed its own border guards for allowing the laborers to cross, though they had neither visas nor passports. Two Afghan border guards were dismissed and could face charges of neglect of duty, the ministry said.

In Tehran, Iran's chief of border guards, Gen. Hamid Sharafi, denied there was any shooting at Afghan migrants, according to Iran's semi-official ISNA news agency.

"Such a report is not right. We do not confirm it based on our investigations," Sharafi said.

Several wounded laborers who arrived at the Farah district hospital for treatment also reported dead compatriots and said as many as 21 laborers were taken away by the Iranian border guards, said Abdul Rahman Zhawandai, a spokesman for the Farah provincial governor.

On Saturday, Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rasoul called the Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan to lodge a complaint and to seek more details about the incident, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Janan Mosazai.

"We are following this issue very seriously through our embassy in Tehran," Mosazai told reporters Sunday. While admitting that the migrants were trying to enter Iran illegally, he said "the reaction of Iran should have been a civilian reaction, not a military" one ? a reference to the shooting.

Protests over the incident erupted on Sunday on the Afghan side of the border. Dozens of residents demonstrated in the streets of the provincial capital, also named Farah, shouting anti-Iran slogans.

Poor Afghans often try to sneak into Iran in search of work as day laborers.

Elsewhere in Afghanistan, a roadside bomb on Sunday killed a district prosecutor in southern Helmand province, where Taliban insurgents roam with relative ease in much of the countryside.

The bomb struck early in the morning as prosecutor Mohammed Lal Hakimi was on his way to work, said Ummar Zawaq, a spokesman for the provincial governor.

Zawaq said the district prosecutor received threats from the Taliban, angry about the number of insurgents he convicted and sent to prison.

No one claimed responsibility for the killing, but Taliban have stepped up their assassinations in recent months, attacking government and security officials they accuse of being traitors.

Former Lions wide receiver Titus Young has again run into off-field trouble.

Young was arrested this weekend in San Clemente, Calif. on charges of burglary, assault on a peace officer and resisting arrest, Lt. Joe Balicki of Orange County Sheriff?s Department confirmed to PFT on Sunday afternoon.

Young is currently being held on $75,000 bail and is expected to be arraigned on Monday, Balicki said. The burglary and assault charges are felonies, Balicki said, with the resisting arrest charge a misdemeanor.

According to Balicki, the incident unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on Friday night when a homeowner contacted authorities alleging someone was inside her home. When sheriff?s officers arrived, they found Young outside the home, Balicki said. According to Balicki, Young ran away from officers. After a ?brief? pursuit on foot, there?was a ?physical altercation,? Balicki said, with Young alleged to have fought officers before being taken into custody. Neither Young nor officers were hurt, Balicki said. According to the Orange County Sheriff?s Department website, Young was arrested and processed on Saturday.

Earlier in the week, the 23-year-old Young?was arrested?on DUI and burglary charges.

Young showed promise in two seasons with the Lions, but the club released him in February. The Rams picked him up, but he lasted just 10 days with St. Louis. In his last game with the Lions, he is alleged to have lined up wrong?on purpose, and the club essentially twice banished him after the incident.

The Detroit News first reported news of Young?s latest arrest earlier Sunday.

?Believe it or not, the federal government is responsible for unintentionally killing over 1,000 dogs in the last 12 years,? reported Inside Edition?s Lisa Guerrero on a segment that aired Wednesday on pets killed by traps set in public areas.?

Indeed, this is happening all over the country ? thousands of these traps have been set on both private and public lands, unintentionally killing family pets and other non-target animals like bald eagles.

That?s the problem with traps ? they are indiscriminate. The fact that a pet dog could be killed by one of these while on a leash in a public park, as described in this segment, simply underscores this fact.

Not only are they unselective ? they?re inhumane, as shown by Predator Defense?s Brooks Fahy, who demonstrates how the traps work with a stuffed animal.

Add this to the long list of reasons why the federal government must reform its Wildlife Services program and start focusing more on non-lethal techniques for predator management. The fatal predator control methods, including traps, poisoning, and aerial gunning, simply present too many risks to ourselves, to our environment, to other species, and, as this segment explains, to our beloved pets. ?

One of the major aspects of academia is sharing your research through public presentations. While public speaking can be stressful, it is a great opportunity to communicate your research and ideas to a wider audience and can be quite satisfying.? No matter what kind of subject matter you are covering, there are a few simple hacks that you can use to improve you public speaking abilities.

Project your voice: Even with common mic technology, it helps to speak in a clear, confident tone for presentations. In order to achieve this, it helps to slow your normal speaking pace and slightly lower your tone of voice. While different from your normal speaking voice, making these changes will help the audience follow what you are saying.

If there is no speaker system it can be somewhat difficult to gauge how loud you need to be for a room. An easy way to determine if your voice is large enough for a room without a microphone is to have a friend sit near the back beforehand and have a conversation at a level where you can hear each other. Once you?ve gotten used to that tone and level, you?re ready to go.

Monitor your posture: When presenting it helps to stand up straight with both of your feet flat on the floor. This kind of body language conveys confidence to the audience and can help bolster your own feelings of confidence before beginning your talk. It also serves to open up the rib cage so that you can breathe evenly and deeply, which brings me to the next point?

Breathe: Never underestimate the power of proper breathing in improving your speaking ability. When you breathe deeply, you don?t have to force your voice from your throat, which can lead to you sounding tense and higher-pitched. Another way to loosen up before speaking is to yawn, as this can help relax the throat as well.

Learn your verbal tics: The most common is ?um? and we?ve all seen this word take over presentations and become a distracting tic. During your next talk ask a friend or colleague to note any tics that you may be abusing so that you can minimize them in the future. Your audience will thank you!

A note for the anxious: You are not alone! Public speaking isn?t a skill that appears over night, and repeated exposure is the best path to proficiency. ?Practice whenever you get the chance so that over time you can become desensitized to the stress of presenting.

In closing: The communication of research and ideas through presentations is one of the cornerstones of academia, so the sooner you become comfortable with this skill the better it will serve you. Hopefully, after enough practice you can come to enjoy aspects of presenting and come to look forward to these opportunities.

Olympics-Germany's Bach announces he will run for IOC presidency

May 9 (Reuters) - German Thomas Bach became the first official candidate to be the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) new president on Thursday, saying his long experience in the world of sport was his strong asset.

The 1976 Olympic fencing champion, who is an IOC vice president and has been a member of the body since 1991, has long been considered a frontrunner in the race even before confirming his plans for a tilt at one of the biggest jobs in sports administration.

The IOC will elect a new president at its session in Buenos Aires on Sept. 10 to replace Jacques Rogge whose two-term rule since 2001 comes to a mandatory end.

"Yesterday I first informed IOC President Jacques Rogge, then the IOC members about my intention to submit my candidature for IOC presidency in June," Bach told reporters in Frankfurt on Thursday.

"From my first training sessions as a young boy through to becoming Olympic champion in Montreal to my current tasks as DOSB (German Olympic Sports Confederation) president, I have dedicated a large part of my life to Olympic sports.

"Thanks to the wide-ranging assignments I was privileged to have in the Olympic movement, I am humbly aware of the magnitude of the task of an IOC President," said the affable Bach, who is fluent in several languages.

The German, who heads his country's Olympic Committee, said he would inform his fellow IOC members of his specific plans for the presidency after June 10, the deadline for presidential candidature submissions.

The powerful Bach, a lawyer by profession and chair of the Ghorfa Arab-German chamber of Commerce and Industry, could come up against other senior IOC members with possible bids from fellow vice president Ser Miang of Singapore, Puerto Rican Richard Carrion and Swiss sports administrators Denis Oswald and Rene Fasel among others.

The 59-year-old Bach has held various other positions within the IOC over the past 22 years.

"At the same time, in honorary positions and throughout my professional career, I have gained a wealth of management and leadership experience in national and international sports, economics, politics, law and society," he said.

"This is why I feel well prepared. I am honoured that over recent months many colleagues in the IOC and the German sports community have supported me in this view."

The IOC session will also elect the host city for the 2020 Olympics with Madrid, Istanbul and Tokyo in the running, and add one sport to the programme for those Games.
