Better economic growth likely to follow weak Q2

(AP) ? The economy is expected to have grown at a dismal pace in the April-June quarter, weighed down by large tax increases and steep government spending cuts.

But the second quarter should be the low point for the year, economists say. The fiscal drag is expected to fade. At the same time, steady hiring, more business spending and a solid recovery in housing should push growth higher in the second half of the year.

Economists forecast that growth slowed in the April-June quarter to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of just 1 percent, according to a survey by FactSet. That's below the tepid rate of 1.8 percent in the January-March quarter.

The Commerce Department will release the first estimate of gross domestic product, or GDP, for the second quarter at 8:30 a.m. EDT Wednesday. GDP is the broadest measure of the output of goods and services, including everything from manicures to industrial machinery.

Most economists say growth is already starting to pick up. And many are predicting annual growth rates of between 2 percent and 3 percent in the third and fourth quarters.

There are threats to the better outlook. Unemployment is still high at 7.6 percent, limiting consumer spending. And budget fights in Washington could lead to a government shutdown this fall, potentially disrupting the economy.

Still, recent data have been encouraging.

"More and more of the economic tea leaves are pointing in the same direction: toward a growth revival ahead," Scott Anderson, chief economist at the Bank of the West, said.

Home construction, sales and prices have been growing since early last year. Americans purchased newly built homes in June at the fastest pace in five years. That's raised builder confidence to a seven-year high, which should lead to increases in construction and more jobs.

Overall hiring has accelerated this year. Employers have added an average of 202,000 jobs a month from January through June. That's up from 180,000 in the previous six months.

Better hiring has started to boost inflation-adjusted incomes after several years of stagnant wages. Joe Carson, chief U.S. economist at AllianceBernstein, a mutual fund company, calculates that average hourly pay rose at a 3.1 percent annual rate in the second quarter, the fastest pace since the fourth quarter of 2008. That was comfortably ahead of inflation, at just 1 percent.

And business spending has started to increase. Companies have ordered more industrial machinery and other equipment for four months in a row. As those orders are filled, factory production should increase.

Manufacturing is also benefiting from strong auto sales, which topped 7.8 million in the first six months of 2013, the best first-half total since 2007. Analysts expect sales will stay strong for the rest of the year.

Carson notes that housing and autos were the primary sources of growth in the second quarter. Both have benefited from the Federal Reserve's low-interest rate policies. Those sectors usually rebound early in recoveries. But after the Great Recession ended in June 2009, they were held back by tight credit and cash-strapped consumers.

"It's almost like a traditional recovery is just starting, even though we're in the fifth year," Carson said.

Federal Reserve officials have forecast better growth in the second half of the year. And Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has said that the central bank could begin to scale back its bond purchases later this year if the economy strengthens. But Fed officials typically put greater weight on employment and inflation data than the GDP figures.

The Fed concludes a two-day policy meeting on Wednesday, at which point it could clarify its interest-rate policies.

Most economists blame tax increases and government spending cuts for the sluggish second quarter. Higher taxes slowed consumer spending. And government cuts subtracted nearly a full percentage point from growth at the start of the year.

Even so, the solid pace of hiring suggests the economy is doing better than the growth figures show. Tax receipts have been stronger. Faster growth in the second half of the year would help close those gaps.

The government is also expected to release comprehensive revisions on Wednesday. Roughly every five years, the department incorporates more recent data and adjusts how it calculates GDP.

The revisions will likely show growth was faster in the first quarter and last year than previously estimated, economist say. Michelle Meyer, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, estimates the revisions could add up to a half-point to last year's 2.2 percent growth rate.

The revisions will also alter GDP data all the way back to 1929. In one major change, the government plans to count spending on research and development as investment, rather than as a regular cost of doing business. That, along with other changes, will boost the level of GDP in 2007 by about 3 percent, or $450 billion. It isn't likely to significantly change the pace of growth in recent years.

'Housewives' star slaps cameras outside court

TV

You'd think that being a star on a reality TV program might make a person immune to intrusive cameras, but Joe Giudice, who appears with his wife Teresa on Bravo's "Real Housewives of New Jersey" apparently has his limits.

The husband-and-wife team who have kept "Housewives" on its toes lately were dogged by numerous cameras and reporters Tuesday morning as they arrived at a Newark, N.J. federal courthouse to answer charges leveled yesterday. In the video, Joe swats away several shooters who get into his face as he and Teresa hold held hands and hurried toward the courthouse entrance without saying a word.

Once inside, the pair heard the charges read aloud and did not enter pleas to the charges; that will be taken care of during their Aug. 14 arraignment hearing, according to NJ.com. They were released on $500,000 unsecured appearance bonds each. In addition, a prosecutor noted that Joe is a citizen of Italy and not of the United States, and faces deportation if convicted. Afterward, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said a plea deal had not been discussed.

The Giudices were charged Monday with 39 counts of fraud after federal prosecutors alleged that they used fake paystubs, tax returns and W-2s to secure nearly $5 million in loans before trying to declare bankruptcy.

They face up to 30 years in prison and millions in fines if convicted. Teresa's lawyer said yesterday that she would plead "not guilty."

2013-07-30_15h34_40Today in an SEC filing, Microsoft revealed a very interesting fact: Its Surface tablet hybrid line brought in revenue of $853 million in the company's fiscal 2013. That places Surface revenue on a per-day basis at $3.4 million. Extrapolated for a one-year period, that financial rate puts the Surface line on a $1.24 billion per-year run rate.

AP Source: Obama to meet with Mideast negotiators

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A White House official says President Barack Obama will meet Tuesday morning with Israeli and Palestinian negotiators involved in a new round of peace talks.

The meeting was to happen at the White House as a second day of talks overseen by the State Department was getting underway.

The Washington negotiations are the result of Secretary of State John Kerry's six months of furious shuttle diplomacy. A previous Obama administration effort to restart stalled talks collapsed quickly in 2010.

The official insisted on anonymity in order to confirm the meeting before it was formally announced.

Cassidy: Vani Kola returns to India and shows startups there the road to U.S. markets and beyond

Vani Kola is a citizen of the flat world.

Kola, an Indian immigrant who I first met nearly 15 years ago, was making a name for herself then with a business-to-business software startup she launched from the Sunnyvale library. She cashed out her stake in that company, RightWorks, in 2000 when the company was valued at $1.25 billion and has since moved back to India.

And what's she doing now? Helping run a Bangalore-based venture fund backing a growing number of companies started by Indians who believe their best bet is to make their mark in the United States.

"We started seeing some shifts," says Kola, 49, managing director of Kalaari Capital. "We started seeing companies saying, 'I'm building the company here, but I'm targeting the U.S. market or the global market.' "

Kola says the increase in Indian startups seeking markets beyond India represents a sea change. But it's a change, she says, that is so early in the making that it's hard to know whether it's a trend that will continue. In recent years, Kola has seen 50 or 60 Indian startups with global aspirations and Kalaari has invested in a half dozen of them.

"Could some great global companies come out of it?" she asks. "We'll have to wait and watch, but we've been impressed by a number of the entrepreneurs who are interested in global markets."

Kola, speaking by phone from a conference in Athens, says India has seen big changes, even in the past five or six years, that make it easier to go global with products dreamed up in India. First there is the availability of venture capital, which Kola says was nearly nonexistent in India when she returned in 2006. Second, there is a larger population of entrepreneurs, advisers and investors who built companies in Silicon Valley and have now returned to India with more of the valley's go-big-or-go-home mindset. And finally, technological progress has made it much easier to run a business that has moving parts scattered around the world.

It's true that we've been talking for years in Silicon Valley about how the world is shrinking ("flattening" in New York Times columnist Tom Friedman's words). And we've always known that startups breed startups, which breed more startups. But it's not often that you see those truths personified as clearly as you do in Vani Kola.

After making her fortune in the valley, she returned to India excited by the prospect of helping her home country's entrepreneurs launch companies aimed primarily at serving India's huge population. But before she knew it, she was working with people like Ketan Kapoor, whose company, Mettl, provides cloud-based, automated skills assessment for hiring managers and others who want to gauge the skills of students, workers or potential hires.

Kapoor, armed with a $4 million investment from Kola's firm, was in the valley recently scouting talent and office locations for his corporate headquarters, which he plans to move from India to San Francisco or the Peninsula. His decision to move was easy, he says. For starters, he's eyeing Fortune 500 corporations and massive online course companies, like Coursera and Udacity -- and those companies are in the United States. And the U.S. is a great staging ground for attempting to conquer the world.

"This is the hub, right here," Kapoor says, sipping tea at a San Jose coffee shop. "The Bay Area attracts the global talent and if you want to set up a global company, this is where you should have your global start."

Kola says Mettl is in a group of portfolio companies establishing a U.S. presence -- including a medical records management firm, a tech support outfit and a digital newsstand that allows magazine publishers to easily present their content across multiple platforms, including phones, tablets and e-readers. Each company has its own reasons, but Kola says there is no doubt that operating in the United States brings with it a certain cachet for those going global.

"The benchmark for a blue chip company comes from these things: being validated and proven in the U.S.," she says.

Vijay Radhakrishnan, president of the Kalaari-backed digital newsstand Magzter, says his company would never have been taken seriously if he hadn't opened its headquarters in New York City, the nerve center of magazine publishing.

"There is a trend," Radharkrishnan says by phone from Manila, where he was networking with Asian publishers. "People want to set up tech companies in the U.S. and then they want to establish the global business from the U.S."

Radharkrishnan, an entrepreneur at heart, says his goal had always been to start a company in India. "It's very strange for me to come and establish a business in the U.S."

But the world, he's found, is a very different place than it was even a few years ago.

And India, it seems, is embracing it.

N. Korea Celebrates Armistice with Military Parade

South Korea and the U.S. are commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice Saturday by honoring veterans and fallen soldiers. North Korea, on the other hand, decided to take a more ... celebratory approach. ?

?

In a huge parade designed to flaunt the military might of the North, tens of thousands of soldiers marched through the capital city Pyongyang. (Via BBC)

?

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un watched over the spectacle with China?s Vice President at his side. North Korea says it was the largest parade in the nation?s history. (Via Deutsche Welle)

?

According to reporters who were allowed to attend, the displays were North Korea?s way of celebrating what it sees as a victory, even though the armistice was a truce. (Via NTDTV)

?

Though, technically, the North and South are still at war. And over the past 60 years there has been an almost constant fluctuation of tensions fueled by North Korean threats.

?

In the past year, though, tensions have been near an all time high. Following a series of North Korean missile launches and an underground nuclear test. (Via RT)

?

Back in 2010, South Korea nearly scrapped the armistice entirely after North Korea killed 50 South Koreans in a torpedo attack against a Southern ship and during a shelling of a South Korean island.

?

South Korean president Park Geun-hye spoke at a ceremony honoring veterans and said she is willing to reopen peace talks if the North agrees to quit its nuclear development program. (Via Euronews)

?

It?s the same demand the U.S. has put forward for years ??always in vain. On Saturday, President Obama shifted focus away from current tensions and asked for more support for the nations? veterans. (Via Al Jazeera)

?

?Here in America no war should ever be forgotten, no veteran should ever be overlooked.? (Via Sky News)

?

In a ceremony following their extravagant parade, North Korea?s ceremonial head of state said: ?The U.S. imperialists sustained a heavy defeat for the first time in their more than 100-year-long history of wars and aggression.??(Via The Washington Post)

?

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, more than 2.5 million people died during the three-year Korean War.

Blast kills six, wounds dozens in Philippine southern city

MANILA (Reuters) - A powerful blast ripped through a crowded popular nightclub in a southern Philippine city late on Friday, killing six people and wounding dozens, police said on Saturday, a reminder of the security challenges despite rising economic growth.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack and an army spokesman said security forces are looking into a potential motive for the attack, including the possible involvement of communist rebels who are active in the area.

"Three people were killed on the spot from the blast," said army spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Leo Bongosia, adding three others including a local politician died in hospitals. "We were shocked. We don't have this kind of attack in years."

Most of the blast victims were attending a medical convention organized by a local pharmaceutical company, were partying in a popular night club in Cagayan de Oro City when an improvised bomb exploded, Bongosia said.

The Philippines has registered the fastest economic growth in Asia in the first quarter, outpacing China. But long-running insurgencies from Maoist rebels and Islamist militants, with ties to al Qaeda, remain in resource-rich areas outside Manila.
