DENVER (AP) ? Caleb Moore grew up racing all-terrain vehicles in Texas but later switched to snowmobiles, learning to do tricks and flips far from the mountain slopes. He was a fast learner, going from beginner to a fierce competitor in action sports in a short time.

But his run could end after a crash last week during the Winter X Games left him in critical condition Tuesday. His family said they weren't hopeful about the 25-year-old's chances for survival.

Moore was performing a flip off a jump Thursday when he caught the top of the hill that was serving as a landing area and went over the handlebars, landing face-first into the snow. His snowmobile rolled over him, but he walked away with help and went to a hospital with a concussion.

Moore later developed bleeding around his heart. His family said that Moore, of Krum, Texas, also had a complication involving his brain.

"Caleb is not doing good at all," his grandfather Charles Moore told The Denver Post. "The prognosis is not good at all. It's almost certain he's not going to make it."

A family spokeswoman thanked fans and friends for their support in a statement Tuesday, but declined further comment.

Moore's younger brother, Colten, was also injured at the games in Aspen on Thursday, suffering a separated pelvis. In a separate event Sunday, a runaway sled veered into the crowd after the rider fell off during a jump gone wrong.

The injuries underscore the dangers at the games, an increasingly popular showcase of the world's best action sports athletes in a festival atmosphere. In Sunday's incident, snowmobiling newcomer Jackson Strong tumbled off his machine during the best trick competition. The throttle stuck on the 450-pound sled and it swerved toward fans who scurried away.

In a statement, X Games officials said they've paid close attention to safety issues during the event's 18-year history. "Still, when the world's best compete at the highest level in any sport, risks remain. Caleb is a four-time X Games medalist who fell short on his rotation on a move he has landed several times previously," the statement said.

B.C. Vaught, Moore's agent, said his client is a quick and determined learner: "Whatever he wanted to do, he did it," Vaught said.

Two weeks after Vaught said he taught Caleb to do a backflip, the then 17-year-old said he was ready and joined Vaught's road show, including a trip to Europe. Vaught said Moore set up a practice ramp in his hometown about 50 miles northwest of Dallas, even though the area rarely gets snow.

Caleb began launching his snowmobile into pools of foam a month before the 2010 X Games. After training briefly in Michigan, he joined the big leagues, Vaught said. In the off-months, he used the foam pit in Texas for practice.

Tucker Hibbert, who won his sixth straight SnoCross title at Winter X, hopes people don't associate the injuries with snowmobiling.

"Obviously, at the X Games, you're seeing the most extreme side of our sport," said Hibbert, of Pelican Rapids, Minn. He said it was natural to "see some injuries and some pretty big crashes when you're pushing the limits."

Vaught said Moore's only previous injury was a bruised hip last year.

"In sports, everybody makes mistakes, even if it's rare. Caleb made a mistake. That's it," said Vaught, who witnessed Moore's crash.

The spills at Winter X haven't been limited to snowmobiles. Rose Battersby suffered a lumbar spine fracture in a wipeout during practice before the skiing slope-style competition. Soon after her crash, Ashley Battersby, who's not related to Rose, wiped out on the course and slid into the fencing. She suffered a knee injury.

Halldor Helgason of Iceland suffered a concussion when he over-rotated on a flip during the snowboard big air competition. He saluted the crowd as he was taken off the icy course.

Moore's crash came more than a year after Canadian freestyle icon Sarah Burke died from irreversible brain damage during training in Park City, Utah. The 29-year-old was a pioneer in the sport and a driving force behind the inclusion of slope-style and half-pipe skiing at next year's Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Perfect storm of errors, neglect in Brazil fire

SANTA MARIA, Brazil (AP) ? There was no fire alarm. There were no sprinklers or fire escapes. And when a band member tried to put out a fire that had been started by pyrotechnics, the extinguisher didn't work.

All the elements were in place for the tragedy at the Kiss nightclub early Sunday. The result was the world's worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, with 231 people dead and this southern Brazilian city in shock and mourning.

Funerals began on Monday, as reports continued to emerge about the accumulation of neglect and errors at the packed night spot.

Brazilian police said they detained three people in connection with the blaze, while the newspaper O Globo said on its website that a fourth person had surrendered to police. Police Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said the detentions were part of the ongoing police probe and those detained can be held for up to five days.

Vieira declined to identify those detained, but the Brazilian newspaper Zero Hora quotes lawyer Jader Marques saying his client Elissandro Spohr, a co-owner of the club, had been held.

The paper said police also detained two members of the band that was performing when the blaze broke out in this university town of about 260,000 people. The band's guitarist told Brazilian media he saw flames lick the ceiling after the group's spark machine was deployed.

More than 100 people remained hospitalized for smoke, local officials said. Paulo Afonso Beltrame, a doctor helping coordinate the emergency response, said he was optimistic that those injured would pull through.

"It's impossible to predict what will happen, because they are all in a very delicate state, but there's hope for all of them," said Beltrame, adding that more than 40 survivors had been sent to neighboring cities for treatment of burns and smoke inhalation. "One of the problems we're having here is that all these people need to be on respirators and we don't have enough respirators in the city."

Funeral services were held for several of the 231 victims, most of them college students 18 to 21 years old. Some of the victims were minors. Most died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

Initial reports suggested the tragedy was the result of a series of failures. Police have said they think the pyrotechnics ignited flammable sound insulation on the ceiling.

Other witnesses said security guards who didn't know about the blaze initially blocked people from leaving without paying their bills. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they're allowed to leave. Many of the dead were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group Gurizada Fandangueira, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the deployment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks, at around 2:30 a.m. local time.

"I felt that something was falling from the roof and I looked up and I saw the fire was spreading, and I shouted 'Look, it's catching on fire, man, it's catching fire,'" Martins said. "Then the drummer tried to throw water on it, and it looked like the fire spread more then. Then the security guards came with an extinguisher, tried to use it, but it didn't work."

He added that the club was packed and estimated the crowd at about 1,200-1,300 people.

"I thought I was going to die there. There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Martins confirmed that the group's accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other band members made it out safely. Martins said he thought Jacques made it out of the building and later returned to save his accordion.

Martins said the group nearly always used the so-called Sputnik pyrotechnics machine and that it had never before caused any problem, even in smaller venues. An electrical short circuit could also possibly have been to blame for the fire, he suggested.

Still, police were leaning toward the pyrotechnics as the likely cause of the tragedy. Police inspector Antonio Firmino, who's part of the team investigating Sunday's blaze, said it appeared the club's ceiling was covered with an insulating foam made from a combustible material that ignited with the pyrotechnics. He said the number and state of the exits is under investigation but that it appeared that a second door was "inadequate," as it was small and protected by bars that wouldn't open.

Television images from Santa Maria showed black smoke billowing out of the Kiss nightclub as shirtless young men who attended the university party joined firefighters using axes and sledgehammers to pound at the hot-pink exterior walls, trying to reach those trapped inside. Teenagers sprinted from the scene after the fire began, desperately seeking help. Others carried injured and burned friends away in their arms. About half of those killed were men, and another half women.

The party was organized by students from several academic departments at the Federal University of Santa Maria. Such organized university parties are common throughout Brazil.

Beltrame said he was told the club had been filled far beyond its capacity, and the crowds and thickness of the smoke made it hard for people to find their way out.

"Large amounts of toxic smoke quickly filled the room, and I would say that at least 90 percent of the victims died of asphyxiation," Beltrame said. "The toxic smoke made people lose their sense of direction so they were unable to find their way to the exit. At least 50 bodies were found inside a bathroom."

Beltrame said people who were inside the club and thought they made it out safely have started to turn up at area hospitals with symptoms of smoke inhalation, which he said can take hours or even days to appear. He estimated that around 15 people have sought out help in the past few hours and said some have had to be intubated.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.

(Reuters) - Honeywell International Inc posted fourth-quarter earnings just above Wall Street estimates, reflecting the diversified U.S. manufacturer's campaign to boost profit margins in the face of sluggish sales growth.

Overall profit margins rose to 15.6 percent of sales from 15.1 percent a year earlier as Chief Executive Officer Dave Cote has been pushing to boost productivity across the company's four divisions, including consolidating businesses into fewer locations.

Revenue rose 1 percent to $9.58 billion from $9.47 billion a year earlier.

The company's performance materials unit, whose products include chemicals and equipment used in oil and gas production, notched the strongest sales growth in the quarter, up 8 percent. At the transportation systems unit, which makes products that include automobile turbochargers, sales fell 11 percent, reflecting weak European demand.

In Davos, examining the Arab Spring's mixed bag

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? The convulsions of the Arab world are taking center stage at this year's World Economic Forum gathering in Davos, where leaders and experts are much preoccupied with the region's bewildering combination of high hopes, deep disappointments and grave dangers that threaten to spill over borders.

Along the way, a divide seems to be emerging between those fundamentally impressed with the startling presence of once-unimaginable people power in long-repressive countries ? and others more troubled by the poverty and corruption that persists, the instability that has resulted, and the rise of both political Islam and jihadi insurgencies.

Asked whether democracy was prevailing in his native Egypt, former Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa hedged, saying democracy "is not only the ballot box. It is the respect of human rights, for rights of women, separation of powers, independence of the judiciary."

"This meaning of democracy we have not yet achieved," said Moussa, who ran unsuccessfully for president of Egypt last year.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, speaking on the same BBC-sponsored panel, saw the glass half full.

"If we had this meeting two years ago in Davos, no one would imagine there would be elected presidents in Cairo, in Tunisia, in Libya, in Yemen," he said. "So we have to be fair to these societies. In two years they achieved a lot of things."

Indeed, such intense focus on the Middle East was a far cry from the situation here two years ago, when the Arab Spring was just beginning and the region barely registered at a forum still focused on the global financial crisis. This week, as Egyptians prepare to mark on Friday the anniversary of the start of the revolution that swept aside Hosni Mubarak, the issue seems to come up at every panel that even tangentially touches on politics or strategy.

For many of the speakers, there is much to be disappointed about. The uprisings that first began in Tunisia in December 2010 did bring down dictators in Tunisia, Yemen, Libya and Egypt. But now Islamists and liberals wrangle over power, with the former mostly on top, democracy is far from certain, and economies are crumbling.

Moussa and Davutoglu agreed that a key accomplishment from the past two years was the casting aside of the notion that Arabs are condemned to autocratic rule, a belief long accepted even by elites in the Arab world itself.

More Arabs are politically engaged than ever before, demanding to be heard. They're learning what it means to question everything and everyone after decades under heavy autocracies where discussion, innovation and public participation were discouraged ? or crushed.

But it can be a double-edged sword, breeding instability and even violence when expectations cannot be met.

"On the one hand we have a political process which has really gone into uncharted waters (and) has proven to be much more difficult (and) much more divisive" than expected, said Tunisian economist Mustapha Kamel Nabli. Especially worrisome is the economic situation in which many countries are suffering low growth, high unemployment and fiscal difficulties, and yet "expectations have never been so high" among a newly empowered public, he said.

"People want things now. People want jobs now. People want increased wages now," he said. At the same time, political players are not necessarily responsible or capable enough to respond, he said. "This is not sustainable."

Addressing the issue at a news conference at Davos, Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil admitted that "economic challenges are clear in terms of high poverty rate and unemployment and budget deficits" ? but added that "we also consider that the potential of the Egyptian economy is huge."

Troubling in a different way is Syria ? a hemorrhaging wound, with death and destruction mounting in a civil war that the U.N. says has killed 60,000. Neither the regime of Bashar Assad nor the rebels seeking to oust him seem able to win, sectarian hatreds are burning ever stronger and the conflict threatens to destabilize Syria's neighbors.

Perhaps most worryingly for the West, armed Islamic militants, some with al-Qaida links, have emerged emboldened in Syria and elsewhere in the region, and they are better armed, with weapons from Libya's civil war now smuggled freely from country to country.

"The dog that didn't bark during the Arab Spring was al-Qaida," Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, told a panel devoted to "The Global Security Context." Now al-Qaida "is finding very important pockets in Syria, in the Sinai Peninsula, across North Africa in an arc from northern Nigeria through Mali and into northern Somalia."

Indeed, the presence of jihadis in the Syrian rebellion has certainly been a major reason for the world community's reluctance to arm the rebels or back then in a way that goes much beyond the rhetorical.

More complex is the rise of political Islam, which seems to prevail wherever free elections are held. The question on many minds is which way the Arab version of this movement will go: toward a reasonably modern and liberal model, like Turkey's, or toward the repression of the Islamic Republic of Iran? Even Saudi Arabia, a staunch ally of the West, is essentially a discomfiting model ? a place with no free elections, where women may not drive and must be accompanied by male escorts for some of the most routine actions.

Thus the new Islamist rulers in the region are constantly under scrutiny.

The main case in point is Egypt, where Islamist President Mohammed Morsi narrowly won a June 2012 vote. Despite promises of inclusiveness, he has kept policy-making and the choice of appointments almost entirely within the Muslim Brotherhood.

Last month saw deadly riots over the contentious Egyptian constitution, which critics say subtly but disturbingly opens the door to theocracy. Islamists finalized the draft in a rushed, all-night meeting, throwing in amendments to fit their needs, then pushed it through a swift referendum in which only a third of voters participated. The result is a document that could bring a much stricter implementation of Shariah, or Islamic law, than modern Egypt has ever seen.

Opponents worry the group is virtually stepping into the shoes of Mubarak's former ruling party. The opposition has called for mass protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square and in major cities around Egypt on Friday to mark the Jan. 25 anniversary of the anti-Mubarak uprising's start. This time, the aim is to show the extent of public anger against Morsi.

Is there a contradiction between Islam and democracy?

No, insisted Moussa, the former Arab League chief. "Most of us hate what al-Qaida is doing. Islamic society has nothing to do with this, and (Islam) does not contradict democracy," he said.

There remains the question of whether the spirit of revolt will eventually reach the Arab monarchies of the Gulf. They have largely remained untouched so far, with the exception of Bahrain, where Saudi Arabia and its allies have helped put down an uprising by disenfranchised Shiites.

Qatar has emerged as perhaps the biggest winner of the Arab Spring, using its oil and natural gas wealth to spread its influence by helping rebels in Libya and Syria and propping up Morsi's government in Egypt with financial aid.

Saudi Arabia has felt more vulnerable. It has its own restive Shiite population and, despite its oil riches, unemployment is high among its burgeoning youth population.

Saudi Prince Turki Al Faisal, a former Saudi intelligence chief and ambassador to the United States, sounded a skeptical note about Western-style democracy.

"A heard a lot here about democracy," he told one panel. "When I hear of something becoming a model or a mold or a fashion like democracy is today, immediately I cringe. I think those who think of democracy as a Viagra pill that could solve their dysfunction ... are not on the right path.

"You need to have your own solutions," Faisal said, to laughter and applause from many fellow Arabs in the audience.

John Kerry: Global climate change is a 'life-threatening issue'

John Kerry said the US must play a key role in slowing the effects of climate change in his confirmation hearing Thursday. Climate change has been a central focus of Sen. John Kerry's political career.

Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, said at his confirmation hearing that the U.S. should pursue policies to boost clean energy and energy efficiency. In his state and others, such as California, "the fastest growing sector of our economy is clean energy,"?Kerry?said. "It's a job creator."

Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has made climate change a central focus of his Senate career and led a failed effort in the Senate for a climate change bill in 2010.

Kerry?told fellow senators he would be a "passionate advocate" on the issue if confirmed as secretary of state, "not based on ideology but based on facts, based on science. And I hope to sit with all of you and convince you that this $6 trillion (energy) market is worth millions of American jobs and leadership, and we better go after it."

Failing to deal with climate change was more of a risk than addressing it head-on,?Kerry?said, citing damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, drought and wildfires. Congress is expected to approve more $50 billion in disaster relief for Sandy victims alone. The storm pounded Northeastern states in late October and has been blamed for 140 deaths.

"If we can't see the downside of spending that money" as a short-term fix after a disaster "and risking lives for all the changes that are taking place ? to agriculture, to our communities, the ocean and so forth, we're ignoring what science is telling us,"?Kerry?said.

On a related issue,?Kerry?said he has made no decision about the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada. Environmental groups have been pressuring the Obama administration to reject the pipeline, saying it would carry "dirty oil" that contributes to global warming.

Kerry?said a review process is well underway at the State Department. The department has jurisdiction over the pipeline because it crosses an international border.

"It will not be long before that comes across my desk,"?Kerry?said. "And at that time, I'll make the appropriate judgments about it."

Josh Duhamel named host of Kids' Choice Awards

NEW YORK (AP) ? There's plenty of green slime in Josh Duhamel's future.

The star of "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" on Wednesday was named host of Nickelodeon's 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards, which will be broadcast from the Galen Center in Los Angeles on March 23.

Duhamel, who starred on the NBC drama "Las Vegas," has already been inducted into Nickelodeon's Arm Fart Hall of Fame and showered in green goo.

The Kids' Choice Awards honor kids' favorites in film, music, sports and television by tallying the votes of kids online and via mobile devices. During the show, green slime is routinely dumped on celebrities and winners receive trophies shaped like blimps.

Last year's awards, hosted by Will Smith, attracted 6.2 million viewers.

???? (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130123/588983 )

Tandis que la tendance ??Bring Your Own Device??

  • Gary Kessler , professeur agr?g? ? l?universit? d?a?ronautique d?Embry-Riddle et membre du groupe de travail ICAC Northern Florida

Protein structure: Immune system foiled by a hairpin

Jan. 21, 2013 ? The innate immune system detects invasive pathogens and activates defense mechanisms to eliminate them. Pathogens, however, employ a variety of tricks to block this process. A new study led by Karl-Peter Hopfner of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet (LMU) in Munich shows how the measles virus thwarts the system, by means of a simple hairpin-like structure.

The innate immune system is the body's first line of defense against invasive pathogens and noxious chemicals. Essentially the system consists of an array of receptors that recognize particular molecular conformations which are characteristic of pathogenic organisms and viruses. Among the classes of molecules bound by these receptors are viral nucleic acids, which are bound specifically by so-called RIG-I-like receptors in the cytoplasm of infected cells. One of these is MDA5, which polymerizes into filaments on long double-stranded RNAs that indicate the presence of RNA viruses. RIG-I itself binds to shorter terminal segments of viral RNAs.

However, viruses have come up with a plethora of ways to avoid triggering immune defense measures. "The virus that causes measles, for instance, produces a so-called V protein, which binds specifically to MDA5 and one other RIG-I-like receptor, and thus impairs recognition of virus-infected cells by the adaptive immune system, although it does not inhibit RIG-I itself," says Professor Karl-Peter Hopfner of LMU's Gene Center. Indeed this kind of competition between viral and cellular proteins largely determines the distribution and -- above all -- the virulence of viral pathogens.

A hairpin opens up the receptor "We have been able to crystallize the complex formed by the V protein and MDA5 for the first time, and have determined its three-dimensional structure in detail," Hopfner reports. This structure also permitted Hopfner's team, in collaboration with LMU virologist Professor Karl-Klaus Conzelmann, to clarify the mode of action of the V protein. The analysis revealed that it inserts a hairpin loop into the core secondary structure of MDA5, unfolding the protein and allowing V to bind to a segment that is normally buried in the interior of the molecule. This in turn prevents MDA5 from forming filaments and signaling the presence of viral RNA.

This finding was completely unexpected, and explains why MDA5, but not RIG-I, is inhibited by the V protein: This internal sequence is different in RIG-I and this is the reason why RIG-I is not targeted by the viral product. "Our work provides a detailed insight into the mechanisms viral proteins use to inhibit host protein function. It may also open opportunities for new therapeutic interventions," Hopfner concludes.

Slow Cooker Chicken Chile Verde | Slow Cooker Chicken Recipe ...

One of Josh?s favorite meals is chile verde, but he usually only makes it a couple of times a year because it takes awhile. He was in the mood for chile verde, but didn?t want to do the work, so he dusted off our slow cooker to make Slow Cooker Chicken Chile Verde.

Josh prepared everything in the morning so he could eat chile verde for dinner. He kept talking about his chicken chile verde recipe all day long. He was so excited for dinner time.

Josh usually makes chile verde with pork, but used chicken this time because he was in the mood for chicken and we had it in the fridge.

Josh?roasted tomatillos and Anaheim peppers in the oven to bring out their flavor. He combined the roasted tomatillos and peppers in the blender with onion, garlic, cilantro, jalape?o, lime juice, and some spices to make the chile verde sauce. I tasted the sauce and it was soooo good! I wanted to eat the sauce with a bag of tortilla chips, but Josh was guarding the chile verde sauce with his life. He said it was for HIS recipe.

He poured the killer sauce into the slow cooker with chicken broth and the chicken. He turned on the slow cooker and let the chicken chile verde cook away.

We ate dinner early that night because Josh couldn?t contain himself. He served his Slow Cooker Chile Verde with cilantro lime rice, beans, and tortillas. He LOVED his slow cooker meal. He couldn?t believe how good it was. He is sold on this Slow Cooker Chicken Chile Verde recipe.

Josh didn?t take our slow cooker back to the basement because she said he is going to be making this recipe again and very soon.?This Slow Cooker Chicken Chile Verde recipe makes a great weeknight meal. It is also great for serving a crowd. Josh is already talking about making it for Super Bowl Sunday! Give it a try!

Yield: Serves 6-8

The slow cooker does all of the work! Serve with tortilla, rice, and beans for a tasty meal!

Ingredients:

2 lbs tomatillos husked, washed and dried, and cut in half
10 medium Anaheim peppers, cut in half, seeds removed

Juice of 1 lime
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
2 cups chicken broth
2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breast
Tortilla, beans, and rice for serving, optional

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Place tomatillos and Anaheim peppers on two large greased baking sheets. Roast until tomatillos are golden brown about 5-7 minutes, and until peppers are charred.

2. Place peppers in a brown paper bag to sweat for about ten minutes. Remove the peppers from the bag and peel.

3. In a blender or food processor, combine 6 peppers (12 pepper halves), tomatillos, jalape?os, onion, garlic, cilantro, cumin, paprika, lime zest and juice, sugar, and salt and pepper to taste. Blend until smooth.

4. Dice the remaining Anaheim peppers. Pour salsa verde, chicken broth, diced Anaheim peppers, and chicken into the slow cooker. Add salt and pepper.

5. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours or untill chicken is at least 165 degrees in center of meat.

6. Once chicken is cooked using a slotted spoon remove chunks of chicken to a cutting board and shred and return to crock pot with chile verde sauce. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Serve warm with tortillas, beans, and rice.

Carlos Gutierrez Open To Immigration Reform In Pieces

WASHINGTON -- Prominent conservative supporters of immigration reform said Thursday that they are committed to a set of principles on the issue but don't much care how Congress gets to its end point, including whether a comprehensive bill is used or if a specific pathway to citizenship is included in a final bill.

All of the speakers at a press conference hosted by the National Immigration Forum said they believe undocumented immigrants should be allowed to eventually become citizens. As to how it gets done, they're pretty open to suggestions, such as one from Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) that would allow undocumented immigrants to become citizens eventually but without a special pathway.

"We support immigration reform, we support something that can get passed," former Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez said. "We're not going to second-guess people as long as they're making progress."

Gutierrez is one of many Republicans and conservatives who have amplified their push for immigration reform in the wake of the 2012 election. Five of them -- Gutierrez, Chamber of Commerce President Tom Donohue, Indiana Attorney General Gregory Zoeller (R), Barrett Duke of the Southern Baptist Convention and Johnny Young of the Conference of Catholic Bishops -- spoke in Washington Thursday to urge comprehensive reform.

The biggest questions, though, were over how the men aligned with other reform supporters. Democrats have urged a comprehensive approach, with the White House warning that Congress could pass some of the less contentious measures of immigration reform and then skip over others, such as a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country.

Another major divide between the parties is over whether that pathway should exist at all, a piece that is deemed absolutely necessary to most Republicans. The panel praised Rubio for his ideas on immigration and his leadership, although not specifically endorsing them as the right path. Donohue said he suspects reform will include a "series of steps" to citizenship, but that it can be worked out later.

"This issue doesn't bother me or worry me one bit," he said. "If we get to the point where we have a program to deal with immigration in this country in a fundamental way, we'll resolve that question."

Donohue said he also doesn't think it's a problem that Republicans have said they want a piecemeal approach, although he sees many advantages to immigration reform in a comprehensive bill. He said he and his staff are often in touch with the labor group AFL-CIO, and he met earlier in the day with organization President Richard Trumka. If their groups can come to some sort of consensus, it bodes well for Congress, Donohue said.

"I believe we ought to just move forward on all of the arrangements so that ... we'll develop an understanding of all of these issues and then finally decide whether we'll do it in one, two or three pieces," he said. "That is the least of our worries, the fact is that they do it. For us, we'll continue to talk about a comprehensive bill."

Gutierrez, a founder of super PAC Republicans for Immigration Reform, gave a similar remark when asked whether a bill should be comprehensive. The final details of the super PAC are still being sorted out, but it should be able to lend politicians cover to "come out and admit that they are for immigration reform," Gutierrez said.

"We had a 750-page bill, a comprehensive approach [in 2007], and it was dismissed by one word: amnesty," he said. "That's the trap of these large, comprehensive, very complex bills. Having said that, I think it's a tactical issue and I hope it's resolved as soon as possible because there are so many other, bigger things that have to be addressed."

Five Years Into Fracking Boom, One Pa. Town At A Turning Point

The natural gas fracking boom has sped up life in Towanda, Pa. There are positives and negatives to that fact ? Towanda's unemployment rate stayed low throughout the recession, but its crime rate jumped, too. And now that natural gas prices have slowed down drilling, Towanda is wondering whether its boom is already turning into a bust.

Thomas has 20, OSU hands Michigan 1st loss, 56-53

(AP) ? Deshaun Thomas had 20 points and scored the first and last baskets in a 16-0 first-half spurt and No. 15 Ohio State beat second-ranked Michigan 56-53 on Sunday, probably denying the Wolverines their first No. 1 ranking in more than 20 years.

After Trey Burke, who led the Wolverines (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten) with 15 points, hit a 3-pointer to open the game, the Buckeyes took the lead for good although there were many nervous moments by the finish.

Burke had a shot to tie the game with 17 seconds left, but it rattled around and out.

Lenzelle Smith Jr. then hit two foul shots with 12.7 seconds left and Aaron Craft added two more to seal the outcome for the Buckeyes (13-3, 2-2).

The loss also prevented Michigan from setting a school mark for fastest start. The 1985-86 team had also opened with 16 wins.

Down 21 in the first half, Michigan kept chipping away. The Wolverines switched defenses, causing the Buckeyes problems with matchup zones.

With just over 11 minutes left, Burke had a chance to cut the lead to six points but Shannon Scott closed fast to block his breakaway layup. At the other end, Thomas made a 3 for an 11-point lead.

But the Wolverines kept applying the pressure.

Tim Hardaway, who had 12 points, scored on two slashes through the lane, Jordan Morgan hit a free throw and Hardaway then hustled back in transition to throw down an alley-oop pass from Burke. After a nice defensive play stopped Smith, Burke pulled up and hit a 15-footer. Hardaway then pumped in a long 3 from the top of the key behind a pick to narrow the gap to 44-43 as the clock ticked under 7 minutes.

Moments later, Glenn Robinson III was open for a 3 from the right wing to tie it at 46.

The Buckeyes regained some momentum when Shannon Scott fed post player Evan Ravenel for a dunk to regain the lead. On the next possession, Ohio State went inside again and Ravenel, averaging 6.3 points a game, bulled his way for another bucket.

After another Michigan missed shot, Thomas took a pass on the left baseline and made a quick spin to the endline before banking in a shot for a 52-46 lead.

The Wolverines missed six straight field-goal attempts in a row down the stretch, going scoreless for more than 4 minutes until Burke hit two free throws with 1:37 left to cut the lead to 52-48.

A steal and dunk by Robinson made it 52-50 with 1:16 left.

Thomas, the Big Ten's leading scorer, missed an off-balance jumper from 15 feet with 50 seconds left. After a timeout to discuss strategy, the Wolverines worked the ball around before Burke's shot with 17 seconds left. It rattled around and then ricocheted out, with Ohio State's Smith rebounding. He was fouled, but the Buckeyes still weren't in the bonus.

Smith was fouled again on the inbounds pass and converted both foul shots with 12.7 seconds left.

After Burke missed a long shot, Craft was fouled with 6.2 seconds remaining and hit two more free throws.

Burke closed the scoring with a banked-in 3 from in front of the Michigan bench.

The Buckeyes played perhaps their best of the season in the opening 15 minutes.

After Burke hit a 3 on Michigan's first trip down the court, the Wolverines went 7:18 without a point. Meanwhile, the Buckeyes were getting to the basket, hitting open perimeter shots, scoring in transition and holding their own under the basket.

Thomas got it going for Ohio State with a shot from the left wing that ignited scoring on seven consecutive possessions. Center Amir Williams followed a miss for a 4-3 lead before Craft ? who had been in a shooting slump most of the year ? popped in a 3. Then Smith blocked a shot by Hardaway and then hit a layup at the other end. Craft then scored on back-to-back drives. Thomas ended the spurt the way he started it, with a shot from the wing, this one a 3, for a 16-3 lead to cap the 16-0 run.

Michigan looked disorganized on offense and had difficulty making any stops on defense.

The Wolverines finally got a surge late in the half, thanks to Albrecht ? who exceeded his career high by a point by scoring seven in the opening half.

He made all four free throw attempts after getting fouled on drives, then hit a 3 during a 14-5 run to close the half.

Ohio State had battled some nagging problems all season. The Buckeyes have struggled to find an offensive and defensive presence in the post after two-time All-American Jared Sullinger departed after last season for the NBA. They have also shot poorly in their biggest games, failing to hit 34 percent of their shots from the field in the losses to Duke, Kansas and Illinois.

The Buckeyes have been at their best against their worst opponents, and vice versa. They came into the game 12-0 vs. unranked teams and 0-3 against those in the Top 25. Their losses included defeats at Duke (ranked No. 1 before losing its first game on Saturday), at home against No. 6 Kansas and a lopsided defeat at No. 12 Illinois on Jan. 5.

The capacity crowd was loud and boisterous from the beginning. Students had camped out for a couple of days on the concrete just outside the side door of Value City Arena. There was a large banner above the tents that read, "Matta-ritaville," in honor of coach Thad Matta and echoing Duke's "Krzyzewskiville."

Matta improved to 17-3 against Michigan.
