An older Vega: New insights about the star all others are measured by

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Vega, a star astronomers have used as a touchstone to measure other stars' brightness for thousands of years, may be more than 200 million years older than previously thought. That's according to new findings from the University of Michigan.

The researchers estimated Vega's age by precisely measuring its spin speed with a tool called the Michigan Infrared Combiner, developed by John Monnier, associate professor of astronomy in U-M's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.

MIRC collects the light gathered by six telescopes to make it appear to be coming through one that's 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope. It's installed at the Georgia State Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy Array located on Mt. Wilson, California.

The tool boosts resolution so astronomers can zoom in, relatively speaking, to observe the shape and surface characteristics of stars that would otherwise look like mere points even through the most powerful telescopes. By tracking stars' surface characteristics, scientists can calculate how fast they rotate and deduce their inner workings.

Vega is a summer star in the Northern Hemisphere, just visible toward the west at sunset. It's the brightest star in the constellation Lyra. At 25 light years away, Vega is close on cosmic scales. A light year is the distance light travels in one year.

About six years ago astronomers discovered that Vega is rotating so fast it's nearly flinging itself apart. They haven't been able to agree on many of the related details, however. One of the debates centers on Vega's exact rotation rate, which is essential to gauge both its mass and age. Other controversies deal with Vega's tilt as viewed from Earth and the amount of turbulence in the system from roiling gases at the star's surface.

With MIRC's unprecedented resolution, Monnier and his colleagues have taken steps to rectify competing estimates of Vega's rotation rate and other properties The new findings indicate that the star rotates once every 17 hours, rather than once every 12. The sun's equator, for comparison, rotates much slower?once every 27 days, or 648 hours. In addition to finding that Vega is older than previously thought, the Michigan group confirmed its mass to be just over two times the sun's.

"Vega continues to challenge and surprise us," Monnier said. "We found out not too long ago that it has a disk of dusty debris, or a leftover solar system, around it. Then we found out it was a rapid rotator. It's a reference point for other stars, but it certainly isn't boring or normal."

The work will help astronomers build more accurate computer models of stars, so they can simulate those too far away to observe and gain a better understanding of their life cycles.

A paper on the findings is published in the current edition of Astrophysical Journal Letters. It's titled "Resolving Vega and the inclination controversy with CHARA/MIRC." The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA.

University of Denvers Sturm College of Law gets $2.25M gift

The University of Denver Sturm College of Law has received a gift of $2.25 million that will be applied to the school?s experiential learning program, designed to give its students practical, hands-on experience as they prepare for legal careers.

The gift comes from Sturm alumni James Mulligan (1974 graduate) and Joan Burleson (1985), and it will endow the Mulligan Burleson Chair in Modern Learning.

In addition, alumnus and trustee Doug Scrivner (1977) and his wife, Mary, donated $250,000 to the project.

Professor Roberto Corrada was named to the new chair, and will work with the school?s Modern Learning Committee, comprised of leaders in its clinical, externship and legal writing programs, as well as full-time and adjunct faculty.

The school says Corrada has been a leader in experiential law for years in teaching labor, employment, administrative and legislative law.

?We are very grateful to Jim and Joan and to Doug and Mary,? Robert Coombe, chancellor of the University of Denver, said in a news release. ?They are all very close members of the University Community, all truly dedicated to the continued growth of quality at the Sturm College. This is a wonderful gift.?

Facets of the law school?s commitment to experiential learning will include more opportunities in the legal clinics, where students practice as lawyers in real cases, in real courtrooms, guided by professors. Students will also engage in more simulations and externships, honing them for the practice of law.

Mulligan is a real estate attorney and partner in the Denver office of Snell Wilmer LLP. Burleson has worked in commercial and bankruptcy law as a partner with Denver law firms and in-house positions with national companies.

Maternity Hotels Reignite Debate Over Birthright Citizenship

Gutierrez Says Obama Missing in Action on Amnesty

?Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who campaigned for the president in swing states with large populations of Latino voters, said Obama is missing in action from the discussions that are taking place on Capitol Hill,? The Hill reports.

??Who?s missing from these conversations is the president of the United States,? Gutierrez told The Hill. ?When senators from both parties and members of the House are talking, when you have the Senate majority leader and Speaker Boehner both saying that this is an important priority. Who?s the one missing? The president.??

Amnesty Push Expected in January

?The word out of Washington is that the Obama administration is gearing up for a January push to get a comprehensive immigration reform bill through Congress. As soon as the fiscal cliff crisis is resolved, Democrats will be mounting a campaign on social networks to gather support for reform,? says Dan Moffett with About.com.

?President Obama has said that the failure to fix the nation?s immigration system was the biggest disappointment during his first term. He wants to capitalize on his momentum from the election to get a bill passed during the first half of next year.?

Time to Follow the Jordan Commission on Immigration

?In 1995, a bipartisan commission on immigration appointed by President Clinton and headed by the late Barbara Jordan issued comprehensive recommendations that would be a solid foundation for current reform efforts. Jordan summed up how an immigration system should work: ?Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave,?? says Steven Camarota of CIS.

?With 30 million legal immigrants living in the country, and with an illegal immigrant population that has soared to 10-12 million, the Jordan Commission?s recommendations remain a template for responsible reform.?

Democrats Divided on Secure Communities

?Now the division within the party [over Secure Communities] has spread to California, where the top two statewide officials ? both Democrats ? are at odds over the program. State Attorney General Kamala Harris recently told local and state law enforcement agencies that they are free not to comply with Secure Communities,? says Ruber Navarrette Jr.

?On the other side of this issue is California Gov. Jerry Brown, who in early fall outraged immigration rights activists by vetoing a piece of legislation called the TRUST Act. Authored by Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, the bill would have barred local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration agents unless the detainees in question were charged with serious or violent felonies.?

Maternity Hotels Reignite Debate Over Birthright Citizenship

?The discovery of at least two alleged ?maternity hotels? in Chino Hills is motivating the area?s assemblyman to craft a bill creating new penalties for those who he believes are exploiting a loophole in immigration laws.
The state Legislature does not have power over immigration, but Assemblyman Curt Hagman, R-Chino Hills, wants to find a way within the state?s powers to attack the issue,? the Daily Bulletin writes.

?Hagman wants to create new punishments for anyone who breaks state or local law while running maternity hotels, which are semi-underground facilities for women who travel to the United States specifically to obtain American citizenship for their newborns.?
