Olen Monsees, a respected leader in the Kansas City real estate industry for many years, died Saturday after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 72.

A memorial service for Monsees, who had been president of Karbank Real Estate Co. since 1984, is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John?s United Methodist Church, 6900 Ward Parkway in Kansas City. A statement from the Karbank firm described Monsees, who started at the company in 1969, as an iconic figure who distinguished himself for his ?plainspoken wisdom, his quiet dignity and his low-keyed manner that engendered deep loyalty among his clients, friends and colleagues.?Steve Karbank, chairman of the company, described Monsees as an ?extraordinary man.??He was my father?s partner and then my partner for many years,? he said. ?He?d been sick with cancer for the past year, but he totally struck me as a kind of guy who?d live to be 100 years old. He was in great health until one unexpected day.?Barney Karbank, the founder of the firm, died in 2005.Among the many projects Monsees worked on during his career at Karbank was the land acquisition for the Truman Sports Complex, the first cellular tower network in the Kansas City area, and an intermodal rail and trucking hub for Norfolk Southern Railway.Karbank Real Estate is one of the area?s larger commercial property managers.Monsees had bachelor?s and master?s degrees from the University of Missouri. He was a member of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors and was former president of its Western Missouri-Kansas Chapter and national district vice president for the organization.He also was a member of the Kansas City Area Development Council, past president of the Northeast Industrial Association, CORFAC International board member and First Federal Bank board member.?Olen Monsees was the gold standard by which all real estate brokers should be measured,? Steve Karbank said. ?Interestingly, I think any broker who worked on deals with him would agree, no matter which real estate company those other brokers were associated.?

Ron Washington on Jurickson Profar?s failed hit-and-run attempt

SEATTLE -Manager Ron Washington had an opportunity to further the education of Jurickson Profar after the 19-year-old infielder swung at and missed a fastball on a hit-and-run play Friday that resulted in Craig Gentry being thrown out at second.

Washington said Profar picked up the sign fine, but had anticipated a fastball in a certain location and adjusted his swing approach. Washington reminded him that when the hit-and-run is on, the approach must change to making contact first with no anticipation of a pitch location.

?I felt if we could do something other than just a sac bunt, we could find a hole and make something happen,? said Washington, who also expressed no concerns about putting on the hit-and-run with such a young player. ?I felt he could make contact. Profar has struggled while being used infrequently. Since homering in his first major league at-bat and having two hits in his first game, he is just 1-for-13 over a span of three weeks.

You are cordially invited to re-imagine the role of libraries ? specifically the Education Library, First Nations House of Learning Xwi7xwa Library, and more broadly, school libraries will be examined.

The re-imagined teacher education program has inspired revision in the role Education librarians play to respectfully and meaningfully integrate First Nations history, content, and world-views; commit to inquiry and research oriented education; and emphasize diversity and social and ecological justice. Our libraries can support teacher candidates as they acquire theoretical understandings for teaching and apply those theories in their practice. We bring teacher candidates and ideas together in library spaces that offer unique learning environments, where inquiry, collaboration, the role of Indigenous Knowledge, relationships and ways of knowing are celebrated. This session will be interactive: we present our re-imagined roles and seek feedback and ideas to further ensure our relevance for faculty and teacher candidates.
